Filothei Residence

The brief called for a sustainable, contemporary residence for a family with children in Filothei, a primarily residential suburb of Athens designed with gardens, open spaces, and greenery. The plot’s elongated, orthogonal shape -where length significantly exceeds width- along with the taller adjacent buildings, presented spatial challenges for the house design. The residence has been envisioned as a prismatic volume, with edges in plan and on top ‘pulled’ to break down the mass and allow the unique Athenian sunlight to coexist with shadow. Carefully curated openings and cuts further mold the volume, opening the interior to the garden, especially on the narrower sides. The inverted pitched roof balances the scale of the residence and allows abundant light to penetrate deep into the space.

The client’s desire for a calm, solid design that would stand out through its clarity is reflected in the off-white tectonic volumes, enriched by the timber accents at the entrance, a feature that is further explored in the interior design to create an uninterrupted spatial narrative between the interior spaces and the outdoor garden.
