Project: House
Location: Mykonos, Greece
Client: Private
Project Status: Preliminary design
Overlooking Elia beach on Mykonos, this summerhouse
is wedged discreetly into a steep hillside sloping
owards the sea. Like the stepped pathways typical
of this Cycladic island, the stone wall that forms
the spine of the house follows the natural contours
of the landscape. The rocky terrain is integrated into
the building through the perforated treatment
of traditional stonewalls and glazed openings
that frame the exposed rock, altering the effect of light
and shadow on the contrasting materials.
Intimate courtyards provide shelter from the strong
‘meltemi’ winds, while water acts as an extension
of the infinite seascape. The view is framed in small
and large apertures in the stone and plaster walls,
blurring the boundaries between public and private
space. Pure white interiors combine traditional
and contemporary elements, like Mykonos itself.
