Project: House, conversion
Location: Plaka, Athens, Greece
Client: Private
Project Status: Final design
Situated on a pedestrian street in Plaka, the historic heart
of Athens, this listed building from the 1920s used
to be a small hotel. The neoclassical exterior has typical
decorative features from the period. To transform
the hotel into a residence for a family of 6, the entire
ground floor was opened up into a large, welcoming
communal space. Storage is concealed in flexible panels,
whose bright yellow interior echoes the building’s ochre
façade. The central characteristic of the original design-
high ceilings with ornate plasterwork - was preserved
and spotlighted as a feature that is missing from most
modern homes. The stucco ceiling patterns are reflected
in the shiny marble floors, merging the building’s rich
legacy with its contemporary incarnation.
